Multiple Myeloma: The last totally incurable cancer today

Dear Sir or Madam,

Dear donors,

Dear professionals,

Thank you for your interest in the de Gunzburg Myeloma Research Foundation (“DGMRF”).

In addition to the need of much more fundamental and clinical research in the field of myeloma, the DGMRF was established for a number of precise reasons:

  • To exclusively support early-stage fundamental medical research in the field of myeloma: We target to find a cure for myeloma. Hence we intend to finance the discovery and development of novel therapeutics in order to extend patients’ survival rate and life expectancy, while improving their quality of life;
  • To help the exchange of information regarding early stage research in the field of myeloma: We want to make sure that research programs in this area are as coordinated as possible in order to maximize the value of each dollar donated/invested in research, wherever and in whichever manner/channel/means the money was donated/invested (foundation, hospital, laboratory, biotech, pharmaceutical company) in the world; and
  • Indirectly finance the recruitment of dynamic young scientists and doctors: Highlight the need of young talents in this very challenging field, and making research regarding myeloma appealing, while supporting job creation and career opportunities within existing research teams of leading hospitals, laboratories, and pharmaceutical research facilities in the US.

These three aspects, (i) fundamental research, (ii) exchange of information, and (iii) supporting young talents hence innovative research work conducted within prominent institutions, are the drivers of what DGMRF stands for.

We all need to act to advance treatments and quality of life for all people suffering directly and indirectly from this incurable chronic orphan blood cancer.

DGMRF hopes that its approach to adding value will uniquely contribute to making a difference in the field of medical research and especially myeloma.

DGMRF was set up as a private foundation because (i) its founder Vivien de Gunzburg wanted this non-profit to be up and running and start financing research as soon as possible, and (ii) of the limited number of people who have heard of, comprehend the reality and gravity of this disease, and can help this cause. It is essential to bring awareness regarding myeloma, which has unfortunately been quite disregarded so far, and killed so many people for so long.

DGMRF hence has decided to exclusively sensitize and seek donations from private donors, who thanks to their vision and trust, have always been leading new paths, and very early on been the generous donors at the origins of discoveries of great causes, and whose attention and help is even more necessary in the current difficult economic environment.

We are extremely grateful to everyone who has enabled DGMRF to exist, and would like to thank everyone especially donors, friends and doctors/professionals who have and will enable us and all other players helping science to pursue this goal.

Thank you again for your interest in DGMRF.

The founding members and the Board of Directors of the DGMRF.
